My Worries for “Solo: A Star Wars Story”

After the mixed-bag that was Star Wars: The Last Jedi; which has without doubt been the most divisive film of 2017, fans – along with a few of us here at GoneFullGeek – have expressed concern over the upcoming Ron Howard spin-off/prequel story: Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Disney Shoots First

I for one, would much rather not have Disney explore the background to the iconic Han Solo. Part of the charm with his character, is the fact that we don’t know everything – and nor do we need to. His past is a mystery, and that is a good thing. A thing of legend!

The Corellian smuggler was employed by Jabba the Hutt, and is famous for having completed the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs with his legendary ship, the Millennium Falcon.

I really do believe that exploring the origins of Solo is Disney‘s biggest risk, and will most-certainly be another divisive entry in the series. Exploring the unknown; with pretty-much all new characters in 2016’s Rogue One, worked brilliantly; and tied nicely in to the beginning of A New Hope.

I really fear that Solo: A Star Wars Story will undermine what came before it, and could very-much kill the iconic character for many fans; myself included. Nobody can beat Harrison Ford.

That said, the powers-that-be have decided this movie must happen, so let’s wait and see what they deliver.

But given the change in director, after Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired and replaced with Ron Howard, plus the rumours that main-man Alden Ehrenreich needed acting guidance on-set, the odds don’t appear in their favour.

I know I know…

“Never tell me the odds!” – HAN SOLO
