Tomb Raider – Official Trailer #2

Growing up with my brother was… interesting, for lack of a better word. Although we were at each other like cats and dogs, we did have one thing in common; Movies. Well, games as well, but for this article I’ll stick with movies.

We’d watch all kinds of movies when I was a kid. Admittedly, most of them were inappropriate for my age, but watching them was one hell of a bonding agent. From classic horrors like Halloween, to awesome action movies like GoldenEye. As I was the younger brother, I had almost no say in what we got to watch – so most of the time I’d have to watch whatever Jonny wanted to watch, although I’m sure he remembers it differently.

Awesome Movies

Fortunately for me, he has good taste. Most of the time I’d kick up a fuss over nothing, as I’d end up loving whatever we watched together. Well one of those films was Angelina Jolie‘s “Tomb Raider“. In fact, I don’t think I could count how many times I watched it as a kid. Yes I know it’s not an amazing film, but as a young lad; I thought it was great.

That funny, geeky guy and his awesome robot, a really cool bad guy, and of course my favourite thing… Lara Croft. A sexy woman duel wielding pistols and some seriously sweet shorts. So that’s action, a robot and a sexy woman. What more could a young lad want from a movie?

As you grow up, you learn to appreciate different qualities in a movie. Whilst I still enjoy action scenes and watching sexy women jump around on bungee cords whilst shooting bad guys, there needs to be something more to it. Like a good story and decent character development. Well hopefully we’ll get that and more in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.

“Death is not an adventure”

As we all know from playing the many Tomb Raider games and watching several movies, Lara Croft has never been one to worry about the risks, or the odds of success. She’s happy to face any challenge head on, and often comes out on top. This is due (in no small part) to her relationship with her father. Her curiosity, inner drive and desire to explore treacherous lands has landed her in serious trouble in the past. From this trailer, it’s clear that hasn’t changed.

Within the first few moments of the trailer, it’s clear that the odds are stacked against Lara. So much so, that even getting to the island where she believes her father may be, is next to impossible and poses a significant risk to her life. But that has never stopped her before.

“You must stop them, Lara. Promise me.”

The main opposition Lara will face in this reboot, isn’t just a load of booby-traps and flying arrows, there’s also”Trinity“. Now we don’t know much about them, other than that they’re a group dedicated to the destruction of a huge amount of people, and Lara is in their way. So I’m going to talk about another villain; one that seems to be leading “Trinity” on their mission.

Although “Trinity” is looking to bring about a mass genocide, the most worrying thing for me would have to be going toe to toe with Walton Goggins. He’s a fantastic actor and for me, his greatest role has to the part of Boyd Crowder, which he played in one of the greatest shows in the world – Justified.

Walton Goggins plays an incredible villain, which anyone who’s seen Justified can attest to that. I’m sure he’s going to bring a fine degree of fear, mistrust and terror to the role of Mathias Vogel in Tomb Raider. How is our young Lara Croft going to outwit and defeat this cunning villain?

“At some point we have to face up to who we are… Who we’re meant to be.”

As I’ve mentioned, most of us will already know a lot about Lara Croft through the multiple games and movies. Her story has been told time and time again through the games, always putting a slightly different spin on it. But the movies haven’t. In fact, we’ve only had two movies; both starring Angelina‘s Lara Croft.

I’m looking forward to seeing a fresh, new take on Tomb Raider. Hopefully, this origin story will deliver more than the others. Now with Alicia Vikander playing the role of Lara Croft, we may see some serious acting. Not only does she look the part, but she’s very dedicated to the role. Her training is tough and the stunts are even harder, but she’s hitting them head on; which is something of a requirement if you’re playing Lara Croft.

Her most notable movies so far have been in: Ex Machina, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, and Jason Bourne. We all hope she’ll go on to make more awesome movies.

Let’s all hope this reboot takes off and really does some justice to the great character that Lara Croft is.
