A 3rd Blade Runner Movie? Ridley Scott thinks so…

Director Ridley Scott recently revealed that he has another idea for a third movie, set in the universe based on Philip K. Dick‘s novel; ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

After the critical success and the extremely positive fan reception of Blade Runner 2049, it comes as no surprise that Ridley has another idea brewing.

Sir Ridley recently confirmed in an interview with Digital Spy, that:

“I think there is another story,”

He continued, adding:

“I’ve got another one ready to evolve and be developed, so there is certainly one to be done for sure.”

Although audiences had to wait 25 years before returning to the world of Deckard and the Tyrell Corporation, fans were both excited and apprehensive with the incoming sequel (Blade Runner 2049).

Ridley Scott only returning as Executive Producer was a concern of mine, but Director Denis Villeneuve was clearly the perfect choice to bring the world of Blade Runner to modern audiences. And it looks like it won’t be stopping there.

For me; a third entry in the dystopian neo-noir franchise would be more-than-welcome. But that said, this is also a risky prospect.

Replicating Success or Running Out of Ideas?

The original 1982 Blade Runner is a classic that should be owned by every self-respecting sci-fi movie fan, and the sequel; Blade Runner 2049, should be sat right alongside it.

Even though the belated sequel didn’t perform as well as hoped at the box office, it is good to see that Scott isn’t discouraged by this. There are many films that underwhelmed-financially upon initial release, that are absolute classics today.

Blade Runner 2049 was a brilliant sequel, that has a more than satisfying ending, and although I want to see another sequel, I also don’t want the first two ruining. There are very few third entries in a trilogy that live-up to what came before. Still, I wouldn’t rule it out.

One thing is for sure though, Scott needs to Denis Villeneuve to return and helm the third instalment – if there is to be one. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take another 25 years to arrive.
