Old-School RoboCop Sequel Incoming?
Posted on 21st January, 2018 - By Jonathan Hezzlewood
Ed Neumeier, co-writer and co-producer of the iconic, ultra-violent 80’s sci-fi flick; RoboCop, has recently made a comment that has all of us here at GoneFullGeek very excited.
Although many fans were disappointed with the 2014 RoboCop remake – starring Altered Carbon‘s Joel Kinnaman. I for one; thought it was a decent effort, and far superior to any of the sequels that came before it. But I agree, it did have its flaws.
Since it’s release, there has been speculation surrounding a potential sequel, with some fans hoping to see Officer Alex Murphy return to the streets of Detroit once again.
Well, I have some exciting sequel news. No, not a sequel to the 2014 remake, but a sequel to the 1987 Paul Verhoeven directed original.
“I’d Buy that for a Dollar!”
In a recent interview with Zeitgeist Entertainment Magazine, whilst discussing the Barbados Independent Film Festival, Ed Neumeier stated:
“…it’s nice that people are still interested in RoboCop and they have me working on a new one at MGM right now so maybe we’ll get another one out of it.”
When pressed for a little bit more information, Ed said:
“Well, here’s what I’ll say. We’re not supposed to say too much. There’s been a bunch of other RoboCop movies and there was recently a remake and I would say this would be kind of going back to the old RoboCop we all love and starting there and going forward.”
He continued, adding:
“So it’s a continuation really of the first movie. In my mind. So it’s a little bit more of the old school thing.”
You know the saying. “Serve the public trust, protect the innocent, uphold the law.”
If this sequel gets the green-light, then the best chance it has to succeed, is if they ignore all of the previous sequels and bring back the original cast members.
To “stay out of trouble”, the sequel’s best bet to remain honourable to the original. As well as original cast members, they should also bring back original director; Paul Verhoeven to helm the sequel. This would help ensure the new film maintains the aesthetic of the of the original.
If this happens, its safe to say: The Future Has A Silver Lining.
Comment below. You have twenty seconds to comply.
Would you like to see a sequel to the original RoboCop, and ignore all sequels that came before it?
Or would you rather they made a sequel to the 2014 remake, bringing back Joel Kinnaman as Murphy, but ensure the sequel follows an aesthetic more akin to the ’87 original – and obviously, a harder rating too?
Let me know, in the comments below.
