Star Wars Battlefront II – First Impressions

Another Star Wars Story.
Star Wars Battlefront II was released today and I’m excited to share my thoughts about the first few hours of story gameplay. But before we get to that, I just want to say that the focus of this article is not to bash EA.
However, I’d find it difficult not to at least mention the level of disappointment and disgust we at GoneFullGeek have developed for EA over the past few years. Well, their behaviour over the last few months have definitely added fuel to that fire.
With the closing of Visceral Games (developers we love dearly) and now the pure level of greed they’ve shown with their grossly over-priced “Pay To Win” micro-transactions – it’s clear they couldn’t give a rat’s ass about their fans. I don’t believe EA can sink much lower… But knowing them, they’ll find a way.
Anyway, with my tiny rant over, let’s get down to the game itself.
Straight Onto The Battlefront!
So far, I’m having a great time playing Battlefront II. The main character – Commander Iden Versio is awesome. She’s smart, strong and highly capable. But I suspect she has a soft side, after all, she cares about the civilains on her home world. I really wanna know more about her. I haven’t seen all that much of the other characters yet, but I’ve no doubt I’ll either like or hate them accordingly… After meeting Iden‘s father: Admiral Garrick Versio – he’s definitely one I don’t like!
When a game’s mechanics are sloppy, clunky or just plain bad, it ruins a game. Fortunately, though, Battlefront II‘s gameplay is smooth and the player mechanics are simple and fun – which makes experiencing the story all the more enjoyable.
Since it’s been a long time since I’ve played the first Battlefront, my vehicular control was a little off, resulting in severaly poorly timed deaths. But once I got used to the control scheme again, I find it much easier to pilot Tie-Fighters and destroy the Rebel scum!
The graphics are beautiful and the detail in faces and materials is fantastic. The environments are very detailed and their aesthetic is incredibly accurate, which is the most important thing in a Star Wars game… It need to feel like Star Wars, and Battlefront II certainly does.
Just look at a few of these screenshots from the beginning of my play-through, and tell me it doesn’t look amazing.
