Back to the Future Comic Set After ‘Part III’?

Where We’re Going, We Don’t Know… Yet!

Ever wondered where – or when – Doc Brown and his family went after the closing scene of Back To The Future: Part III?

I know I have.

That question, is one I asked myself many times as a child; every time I watched it, sat in my grandma’s house on that lonely Sunday afternoon with little to do.

I’d pop a Back To The Future video-cassette in the VCR, which was usually Part III; as I always loved the wild-west scene, and would sit glued to the TV to the very end.

End of the Line

That ending, where the train lifts from the track – as Alan Silvestri‘s iconic theme kicks in – and hovers through the air; turning back for a ‘run up’, before heading straight at the screen in a flash of light always gave me goosebumps of excitement and left me pondering with curiosity.

In the closing moments of the final movie, Michael J. Fox‘s Marty McFly asks:

“Hey Doc, where you going now? Back to the future?”

Christopher Lloyd‘s Doc Brown replying with the final line of the iconic trilogy:

“Nope, already been there.”

Turn back time and refresh your memory here…

So, where did Doc, Clara, Jules, Verne and Einstein – let’s not forget good-old Eine‘ – go next? And when?

Finally, after 27 years (yep, Part III released all the way back in 1990) of intrigue and wonder, I will finally have my answer, as will you.

Back to the Future: Tales from the Time Train

Writer Bob Gale has said that his upcoming comic book series; Back to the Future: Tales from the Time Train, will connect and somewhat follow-on from the final movie:

“Doc’s already been to the future? We’ve got to show that.” – BOB GALE

From IDW Publishing, the new Back to the Future comic book series is co-written by franchise screenwriter Bob Gale as well as John Barber, and illustrated by Megan Levens.

The synopsis for the story is as follows:

It’s 1893 and at last, Doc Brown fulfils his promise to Clara as he’s completed the project he’s been working on: the Time Train! But where in time and space will the Brown family go on their inaugural trip? And what could possibly go wrong if and when they get there? Lots! Join Gale, Barber, and Megan Levens as they kick off the newest Back to the Future series!

Staying On-Track!

We can relax, and look-forward to continuing the story – albeit in comic book form; rather than a 4th movie – as Bob Gale has confirmed that they will be exploring the intriguing plot thread left by Doc in the closing scene of Part III:

“It was a way for us to stay true to the Back to the Future mythology — I certainly wasn’t going to allow the mythology to get screwed up in any way.”

With John Barber stating:

“It picks up right at the end of Back to the Future Part III from Doc’s point of view —”

And Gale adding:

“— Sort of. We’re trying to make sure none of the fans call us out for screwing up the continuity of it.”

The first issue of Back to the Future: Tales from the Time Train will release on December 27th 2017.
