Death Stranding Trailer – PSX 2017

Hideo Kojima’s Latest Project

Ever since Konami made the mistake of firing Hideo Kojima, and in turn, killing his survival horror masterpiece and disappointing fans the world over, I’ve been wondering what he’d get up to next. Whatever it was going to be, I knew it was going to be something special.

Death Stranding was first announced at last year’s E3 conference, and boy was it confusing. A naked Norman Reedus, dead Whales, oil, and a baby… Since then, we’ve learned a few things about Kojima‘s latest project.

Watch the latest trailer for Death Stranding below:

Decima Engine

We know that the game engine Kojima is using, will be Guerrilla Games‘ very own “Decima Engine” – Built for Killzone and heavily adapted for Horizon Zero Dawn.

Decima Engine

When Kojima announced that he’d be using Decima”, he said:

“Usually when you go to use, buy or borrow an engine, someone will say, “Lend us your name,” or of course ask for payment. We had no contract with Guerrilla Games, but when we met them they suddenly gave us a box, a very pretty box.

When we opened the box, there was a USB dongle inside that had the source code for the engine. Keep in mind we had no contract or anything at this stage, yet still they handed over what was basically the crystallisation of their efforts over many years.

They simply said, “Mr. Kojima please use this engine,” and we thought these people are incredible.”

How nice of Guerrilla Games!

Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us This Time!

At the end of the latest trailer for Death Stranding, Norman Reedus and Hideo Kojima walk on stage to thank the fans. The comment Reedus makes: “Nothing’s gonna stop us this time”, is a reference to the pair’s previous project, Silent Hills”.

Nothing's Gonna Stop Us This Time!

In 2014, I was thrilled to learn that Hideo Kojima was working on something very different to Metal Gear Solid. It was a new instalment into one of my favourite horror franchises: Silent Hill.

The “Playable Teaser” for Silent Hills” was the love child of Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, and Norman Reedus. Simply put, it was a masterpiece. It was eerie, very scary and much fun to play.

Sadly, Silent Hills never saw the light of day due to Konami‘s fall out with Kojima.
